Kuala Lumpur: A company linked to Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen's friend has won the bid for the Ministry's advertising and promotions contract.Juni Ewe is a consultant for Impact Creations Sdn Bhd which won the deal for the domestic market and events.

Ewe, the Managing Director of Impact Challenger Sdn Bhd, said she did not bid directly to avoid putting Ng in a difficult position.

"I did not want Impact Challenger to bid as I didn't want people to accuse the Minister of awarding contracts to cronies," she said.

Ewe said another reason she did not bid was due to a Treasury guideline which dictates that only those qualified in mass communications or advertising can submit tenders.

"I only have a degree in economics," she said.

"However, I must stress that I am not a director, neither am I a shareholder of Impact Creations although I get paid some fees for my consultancy work," she said, adding that she is confident that Impact Creations will do a good job.

Both Ng and Ewe were exco members of the World Chinese Women's Association.

Ng had said it was unfair to drag individuals not listed as directors of the company into the matter.

"Juni is a friend from our women's work," Ng said, adding that she does not get involved in the tender selection process.

Asked if people with vested interest were using her name or those of her family members in a bid to win contracts, Ng said there is little that can be done about this.

"I have been told that some people have been dropping my son's name but my son is banned from the ministry.

"But (I cannot) tell him not to mix with anybody involved with the ministry," she said.

To a question that her son was present at a dinner involving Ministry officials and businessmen, Ng said she had heard of such rumours but maintains it was unconfirmed or a chance encounter.

"My son cannot deny that I am his mother.

"I have heard about this, I suppose this is an occupational hazard," she said.

Stressing that none of her family members have dealings with the ministry, Ng said she has also been accused of holding shares in several companies linked to the ministry.

"I always tell them, please tell me which company," she said, adding that no one has been able to prove this allegation.
