Borneo Headhunter's Hat frisbee is back

Kota Kinabalu: The Borneo Headhunter's Hat frisbee tournament is back for its second run, this time with participants more than double last year's.The tournament, to be held this Saturday, will see 81 participants of 10 different nationalities gather for the day-long event at SM La Salle in Tanjung Aru, here.Participants from as far as Australia, United Kingdom, Singapore, Brunei, Thailand, Sarawak and Kuala Lumpur would be flying to Sabah especially for the tournament.ADVERTISEMENT "We are very excited to see more people coming to Sabah to join our tournament," said tournament director Jaco Swanepoel, before adding, "it's only the second time, but already participants have more than double. It is very encouraging to see such enthusiastic response from people.""It is also going to be quite a interesting mix of individuals as participants are of so many nationalities."The bulk of nationalities are Malaysian, including 60 people from Sabah, Sarawak and the peninsula. The remaining participants are eight Bruneians, four British, two Americans, two Swiss, two Australians, a South African and a Singaporean.ADVERTISEMENT "The youngest player is a 16-year-old high school student from Penampang, while the oldest in a 51-year-old American living in Bangkok."The players have registered as individuals and ranked themselves according to speed, experience, skills and knowledge of the game.

We then divided them equally into five teams of 16 people. Games consists of multiple points of seven people per side," Jaco said.The inaugural tournament last year saw 36 participants from Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore play five-a-side games with the purple team called "Purple Reign" eventually winning.Apart from the winning team, prizes would also be given to the team with the best sportsmanship, and the most valuable male and female player voted for by other players based on their contributions to the team.Sponsors have also stepped up to support the tournament namely Imperial International Hotel, Core Fitness, Mega Tec Consolidation, Gatorade and BTC Group.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

Ultimate, or Ultimate frisbee, is a relatively new game in Sabah with growing interest among locals and expatriates.The public are welcome to watch the tournament, or even join the fun, fast-paced practice games on Tuesdays and Thursdays at First Beach, Tanjung Aru, starting at 6.30pm onwards, or Sunday at the field near Terminal 2 Airport, from 4pm to 6pm.
