Kota Kinabalu: The Association of Sabah National Type Chinese Schools is looking to work together with Mission schools in the State to set up a committee to present a proposal to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak that Science and Maths be taught in English in Sabah schools.According to its Chairman Datuk Wong Yit Ming, the association was happy that Najib has responded on this important issue by saying the Government will seek input from parents before deciding on the teaching of Mathematics and Science in English. "So far, eight secondary schools under our association have asked the Government to look into the possibility of continuing to teach Maths and Science in English," said Wong, Saturday. ADVERTISEMENT He said a survey conducted by the association among the parents of secondary students found a majority of them prefer Science and Mathematics to be taught in English. As such, he said, the association has set up a committee headed by Sub Committee Chairman David Chan to talk to the eight secondary schools under the association together with the Mission schools. "If we can work together with the Mission schools regarding this issue, it will be more effective."We will have a meeting next week and come up with a proposal to get the will of parents and present it to the PM," he said. Wong said the association had already sent a letter to Deputy Prime Minister-cum-Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin requesting him to look into the issue, adding copies of it had also been sent to Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties.ADVERTISEMENT "We have seen the Government make adjustment on the policy concerning Chinese primary schools and are happy with the Federal Government's increase in the allocations to Chinese primary schools nationwide. "But, unfortunately, in Sabah, we haven't got much allocation from the Federal Government.

"One reason, we observe, is that in West Malaysia and Sarawak, not only are the Chinese education bodies asking for funds from the Federal Government but also the Chinese clan associations and Chinese Chamber of Commerce."That is why in today's meeting we passed a resolution to appeal to all Chinese associations in Sabah during their annual general meetings to put up the resolution to ask the Federal Government to help the Sabah Chinese primary or secondary schools. "We believe the Chinese community are concerned about this issue and that if everyone is asking the Federal Government to help the Chinese schools, the results would be better. "We notice that in Sabah a lot of the associations seldom raise issues or questions Chinese education," he said.
