Kota Kinabalu: Youths aged between 15 and 40 account for about half the population of Sabah. This is based on the Sabah Monthly Census Bulletin which shows there were 1.6 million youths under the said age category in Sabah as of February this year.

And of this only 120,000 are currently members of either Sabah Youth Council (MBS), the MBS' 10 affiliate members or the affiliated youth associations at divisional level.

This was disclosed by Youth and Sports Minister, Datuk Peter Pang En Yin, at the opening of the State Youth Consultative Council Series 1/2011 meeting at the Pacific Sutera here Tuesday.

In terms of association, he said the Registrar of Societies' (ROS) statistics up to April this year showed there are 279 registered youth associations in Sabah, an increase from 255 associations registered until December last year.

Nevertheless he wants this to be given serious attention, urging the campaigners and leaders of the youth associations in the State to work closely with the Ministry in the effort to increase the number of youth associations and membership, apart from on understanding the needs of the group.

"Active participation and involvement by youths in the State in associations will reflect strength, apart from showing the practice of healthy lifestyles and culture among our younger generation," he said.

Pang also hoped youth organisations and associations in the State will remain positive in dealing with any sort of youth-related challenges while always working together in reducing the negative impacts of any social problems and crimes for the benefit of all youths.

The said bulletin's statistics showed that out of 3.214 million people in Sabah, some 1.6million are youths, of whom 366,000 are those aged between 15 and 19 years old; 329,000 (aged 20-24); 322,000 (aged 25-29); 309,000 (aged 30-34) and 281,000 (aged 35-40).

Assistant Sport and Youth Minister Datuk Jahid Jahim, among others, was also present.
