Kota Kinabalu: Police are still looking for former ISA detainee Datu Mohd Akjan Datu Ali Muhammad to complete their investigations on the "coronation" of the so-called "Sultan of Sulu" in Kampung Likas on Feb. 2.Sabah Commissioner of Police, Datuk Hamzah Taib said the initial investigation papers have already been submitted to the Bukit Aman police headquarters.

He said Bukit Aman police have subsequently returned the papers and ordered Sabah police to acquire several more statements including from Akjan to settle the case.

"However, the problem is we are still trying to trace him.

He is not in Sabah or in Kuala Lumpur (at the moment)," he said, after attending the special assembly with PDRM civil servants in conjunction with the 204th Police Day at the Federal Government Administrative Complex, Thursday.

Deputy IGP Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar represented IGP Tan Sri Ismail Omar during the event. Hamzah said police have attempted to trace Akjan via the latter's last known address. At the same time, he said Malaysian police are also cooperating with Interpol and its counterparts in the region.

Web portal Sabah Kini reported the self-proclaimed "interim government of the Sulu Sultanate" as claiming that Akjan was a direct descendent of the last reigning Sultan of Sulu, Paduka Mahasari Maulana Al-Marhum Sultan Shariful-Hashim.

The "Prime Minister" of the interim government, Datu Albi Ahmad Julkarnain, announced that Akjan was ceremonially installed as the 33rd reigning Sultan of Sulu Sultanate on Feb 2, 2011, after taking his Oath of Allegiance in a private ceremony.

Subsequently, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman said the State Government does not recognise the Sultanate of Sulu.

Following the so-called "installation" ceremony, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Datuk V.K. Liew also said the Government would never recognise the self-proclaimed Sultan.

He said throughout the years, there have been many people claiming to be descendants of sultans in Sabah as well as in Melaka.

Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) President Datuk Yong Teck Lee said Akjan installing himself in a self-styled coronation in Sabah as the Sultan of Sulu is an insult to the Malaysian Sultans and Sabah Head of State.

Akjan was detained under the ISA in the 1990s together with several others for manufacturing fake Malaysian identity cards. He is also an active Umno member but he later said in a statement that he was relinquishing his membership.

His self-proclaimed Prime Minister, Datu Albi later explained that the event in Kg Likas on Feb. 2 was merely a thanksgiving ceremony on Akjan's acceptance of the offer to be the "Sultan of Sulu".

He said a proper coronation would be conducted later but to date, the ascension to the throne by Akjan has yet to take place.
