350 big bikers for Borneo Fest

Kota Kinabalu: About 350 big bikers, including 10 women from across the globe, are expected to join the 12th Borneo Island International Big Bike Festival (BIIBBF) 2011 from June 10 to 12 here.Organising chairman Angus Wong said this during a press conference here, Monday.

This annual event hosted by big bike clubs from Sabah, Labuan, Brunei, Sarawak and Indonesia was created to gather all big bikers and over the years, it has become a big draw.

"The 12th BIIBBF has now become the largest bike convoy festival ever in the history of Sabah, thanks to the support from sponsors, Sabah Tourism Board, City Hall, Royal Malaysian Police, Fire and Rescue Department, Road Transport Department, private sectors and government agencies," Wong said.

"The mindset of Sabah Big Bikers Club is changing. We are riding towards a new direction. The club will act as an advertising agent to create funds for charity.

"This year, we are donating to Darul Bakti Orphanage in Kota Belud.

"We have future plans of contributing to other charitable organisations such as for the blind and those with special needs."

Major sponsors include Shell Timur Sdn Bhd who will sponsor the event's official shirts. Maestro Swiss Trading Sdn Bhd and Regal Marketing Trading Sdn Bhd, which have supported the club since 2006, will provide 3,000 cups of Vico and Indocafe.

Ghee Hwa Motorpol Sdn Bhd will be providing four back-up Suzuki vehicles and Borneo Biking Adventures will provide mechanic, support truck, recovery trailer, first aid kit, GPS and satellite phones.

"The Fire and Rescue Department will be providing three big bikes with one rapid recovery vehicle and one logistic vehicle. We will help them to distribute pamphlets on the safety regulations relating to the department," Wong said.

Sutera Harbour Resort will sponsor some prizes and Guinness Anchor Sdn Bhd will sponsor 20 cartons of Tiger and four cartons of Guinness Bottle.

F&N Beverages Marketing Sdn Bhd will sponsor 50 cartons of fizzy drinks as well as banners.

One biker who was present during the press conference, Ah Kong, pledged to sponsor 30 cartons of mineral water.

Sazarice will donate 50 bags of rice for Darul Bakti Orphanage Home.

The three-day convoy will cover a distance of about 283km starting at Sutera Harbour Kota Kinabalu heading to Ranau, Kota Belud and back to Kota Kinabalu on June 11.

They will go on a city tour on June 12 ending at Lintasan Daesoka where a big bike exhibition courtesy of City Hall will be displayed.

The public are advised to avoid travelling through the Ranau road to avoid congestion on Saturday morning till afternoon due to the huge convoy.
