Kota Kinabalu: Two Indonesians, believed to be members of the "Geng Palembang" have been arrested for stealing cash and other items worth RM480,000. The duo aged 29 and 35 were nabbed in front of a bank in Kg Air, here, at 1pm on July 6. City Police Deputy Chief, Supt. Hj. Ramli Mat, said with the arrest of both suspects, five out of 11 theft, robbery and criminal intimidation case here had been solved.

"It is believed that this gang has been committing these crimes in the city area since early this year.

Among the 11 cases, the biggest amount of cash they robbed was RM150,000 from an individual at a parking lot in Luyang, followed by RM107,000 from another person," he said, Friday.

Ramli said the two suspects, who rode on a motorcycle, would target individuals who went into banks.

He said they would use sharp objects to puncture one of tyres of their intended victim's vehicle and wait for him or her to return to the car.

"Busy replacing the tyre, the intended victims often forgets to keep his or her bags containing cash in a proper place inside the car and the suspect would move in and flee the scene.

"Some victims would simply place their bags or handbags on the front or back seats inside their car without checking whether their car doors are locked when worrying about the punctured tyre.

To a question, Ramli said police are still carrying out investigations as the gang leader has yet to be ascertained.

The two suspects possessed valid travel documents and their passports showed that they have been everywhere in the region and entered the country legally.

In another case, a man and his 14-year-old son were arrested for causing grievous hurt to a 26-year-old man at a flat in Taman Jaya Diri at 1.15am here on July 11.

Ramli said the victim had to have two stitches on his head after the two suspects beat him with a guitar at 10.20pm. The fight stemmed over a debt.

In another case, Ramli said a mother of two was arrested for having two plastic packs of syabu at a house in Kg Lembaga Padi Inanam on July 10.

Upon raiding her house, he said police saw the foreigner throw something out.

After checking, police found the two packs weighing about five grammes.

The woman is believed to be a drug pusher. Investigations are continuing.
