Acquitted of RM30,000 robbery

Kota Kinabalu: The Sessions Court on Friday freed a 24-year-old unemployed without his defence being called on a charge of robbing a family of RM30,000.Judge Duncan Sikodol discharged and acquitted Suhaimie Samsu Baharun after ruling that the prosecution had failed to establish a prima facie case against him.Suhaimie was accused of using a machete to rob one Shamir Lee Abdullah, 55, and his wife as well as his children of RM20,000 in cash as well as jewellery and three handphones, all valued at RM10,000.ADVERTISEMENT He allegedly committed the offence together with four accomplices still at large at 11.50pm on March 11, this year at a house in Taman Austral, here.Suhaimie had, on March 25, this year, claimed trial to the charge under Section 397 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to 20 years and whipping, on conviction.The prosecution had called six witnesses to testify during the trial which began in June this year.Suhaimie, who was released on a bail of RM5,000 with RM3,000 deposited in two local sureties, was represented by counsel Hairul V. Othman.ADVERTISEMENT In another case, a 26-year-old Filipino was jailed a total of five months and 15 days on two counts of crime.Magistrate Nuruhuda Mohd Yusof handed the jail sentence to Jackson Patin @ Potok after he admitted to both charges against him.

On the second, he was jailed another 45 days for failing to explain how he came to have two handphones and three silver rings, suspected to have been stolen, at 7.10am on July 3 at a house in Menggatal.Nuruhuda ordered Jackson to serve the jail sentences consecutively and to be referred to the Immigration Department upon completion of his jail sentence. Inspector Syahrin prosecuted the case.
