SERDANG: The Government has agreed to increase the duty allowance of Rela volunteers by RM2 per hour, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said. As a caring administration, Najib said, the Government would care for the welfare of all.

"I've discussed this with (Home Minister) Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein and the Home Ministry Secretary-General (Tan Sri Mahmood Adam)... the application by Rela can be approved at once," he said.

The Prime Minister was addressing a Rela assembly at Maeps Hall, here, attended by about 30,000 personnel from throughout the country.

It is understood that the existing duty allowance for Rela volunteers are RM5.80 per hour for officers and RM4 for other ranks.

The new rate takes effect soon.

Najib said as an organisation with 2.8 million personnel, Rela could play a significant role in the country's transformation agenda.

"I did not expect this huge a turnout, like an ocean of people.

I am really amazed that 30,000 Rela personnel are here Saturday.

"There is no other organisation as large as Rela and if all 2.8 million members are with us, the Government is confident national transformation will be achieved," he said.

He said even though the objective in setting up Rela on Jan 11, 1972 was to ensure security and peace through galvanising human resources, the role now of the voluntary organisation had been expanded to assist in crime prevention, in collaboration with the police.

He said Rela's strength together with that of the Police would be employed to contain demonstrators out to create public disorder.

Najib said he wanted Rela's image to be further enhanced with the enlistment of more personnel without any restrictions as to race, urban or rural communities.

He also disclosed that a new Rela Act was being formulated by the Home Ministry to maintain the organisation's relevance in society and the country.

Also present were Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, Deputy Home Minister Datuk Wira Abu Seman Yusof, Youth and Sports Deputy Minister Datuk Razali Ibrahim, Home Ministry Secretary-General Tan Sri Mahmood Adam and Rela Director-General Datuk Mustafa Ibrahim. - Bernama
