Labuan: Labuan was crippled for more than an hour by an island-wide sudden blackout from about 11.30am onwards and power supplies resumed only after 1pm.Emergency services were affected, businesses ground to a halt, petrol stations, ATM machines and traffic lights were not working.

It was an ordeal for road users and food outlets were having a heartache as they were deprived from peak hour business.

According to Sabah Electricity Board Sdn Bhd, (SESB) the blackout was triggered by a power trip at the Pulau Batu power station here.

It also affected some in the southern part of Sabah.

MIC Chairman, Ramasamy Ragasamy, said that this was the second time this year that the island experienced such a nightmare.

He recalled that last January on Chap Goh Mei, Labuan suffered the same fate.

The condition was attributed to a fire which affected both the Tenom and Beaufort distribution system and also Labuan.

Ramasamy said that SESB being in the business for so many years would know of possible such faults and had a standby alternative supply system.

He said that maybe its instruments and equipment needed to be upgraded and there should be a high voltage perceptive system.

Chairman of the Labuan Council, Fauziah Datuk Din, also expressed similar disappointment "occurring twice within a few months is just too bad."

She added that every time a blackout like this occurred it cause the business community to lose money and also lost valuable working hours.

She said that Labuan oil and gas hub plus a financial centre and much of its business was with foreign countries. Certainly Labuan cannot afford such blackouts as it did not provide a good impression of day Labuan.
