Kuala Lumpur: Shuttler Datuk Lee Chong Wei may take longer than four weeks to be 100 per cent fit for competition said National Sports Institute (ISN) physiotherapy expert Sandra Fiedler.Fiedler said the world number one who injured his ankle may take at least five to six weeks to recover fully.

"I don't' think..(that he can recover within four weeks). It could aggravate the injury if he pushes too hard.

However, he is in good physical condition, so the recovery could be a little faster," she told reporters at Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara here Thursday after a physiotherapy session with athletes.

She said Chong Wei must at all times maintain his fitness to speed up the rehab process.

Meanwhile, Chong Wei who was also present at the session refused to meet the press.

Chong Wei injured his ankle four minutes into his Thomas Cup tie against Denmark's Peter-Gade

Christensen in Wuhan China, forcing him to withdraw from the Thomas Cup tournament.

Upon his return, a second round of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at the KL Sports Medical Centre (KLSMC) revealed that Chong Wei had indeed suffered nothing more than a partial torn ligament in his ankle.

He subsequently received treatment from two orthopedic surgeons, namely Dr Saw Khay Yong and Dr Nicholas Geary at the KLSMC.

The injury has since jeopardised his chances of winning the country's first ever gold medal in the London Olympics.

Fiedler has also not ruled out the possibility that Chong Wei was still in trauma after the injury.

"I assume that there's always some sort of fear, when remembering the incident, but it is part of the physio's role to try and revive the confidence of the athletes, so that they can go on," she said.

Chong Wei is expected to undergo physiotherapy Friday. - Bernama
