Kuala Lumpur: The selection of judges for promotion is carried out based on a variety of judicial expertise and legal knowledge irrespective of their ethnic background. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz said the selection was based on Judicial Appointments Commission criteria.
"As stated under Section 23 of the Judicial Appointments Commission Act 2009, the criteria took into consideration integrity, competency and experience, objectivity, fairness and good morality.
"Apart from that, other criteria included firmness and the ability to make accurate timely judgement and skills in legal writing, diligence and the ability to preside cases well as well as mental and physical health," he said in a written reply to a question by Karpal Singh (DAP-Bukit Gelugor) in Parliament, Wednesday.
Karpal Singh wanted to know why there were no judges of Indian descent in the Federal Court even though there were judges in the Appeals Court eligible to hold the post as judge in the Federal Court.
Nazri said for the purpose of transparency, the selection of judges for promotion was carried out under a secret ballot by the commission and they were chosen based on the decision of the majority. - Bernama
