Tawau: Top Barisan Nasional (BN) and Umno leaders have been urged to be vigilant in addressing the "sabotage candidates" issue in the coming general election.Kalabakan MP Datuk Ghapur Salleh said the situation occurred in one of the State constituencies in his parliamentary area during the 12th general election in 2008.

Ghapur said at that time one of the independent candidates was sponsored by a former BN leader, forcing his party to work hard to win the contest for the BN candidate for the area.

"Thankfully, our efforts finally succeeded ... but what is surprising, after the election is over, they both were given awards and one of them was offered a high position in a BN component party," he said.

He said the situation seems to show that "the candidate" and "the sponsor" were given recognition as a result of their actions (candidate sabotage) whereas the BN should be more wary of such individuals.

Ghapur stressed that he was stating this because he does not want the same thing to recur in the next election and does not want to have "insiders" who sabotage the appointed candidates chosen by the BN leaders.

"As chairman of Umno and BN Kalabakan, I see this is an important issue because we want to see BN win big in the next election," he said.

He added that he had expressed the matter at a meeting with the Umno Disciplinary Committee in Kota Kinabalu last month.
