Kota Kinabalu: A Sabahan has taken over command of the Lok Kawi-based Fifth Infantry Brigade here, the first local to assume the post of Commander in the brigade's history.

Outgoing Commander, Brigadier-General Datuk Abdul Halim Abdul Jalal, said his successor, Brigadier-General Datuk Ranjit Singh Ramday, 57, was born and bred in Kimanis, Papar.

"Based on the Fifth Infantry Brigade records, it is the first time that a Sabahan has been appointed as its Commander here.

"I will be assuming his previous post as the Training Management Director at the Army Training and Doctrine Command headquarters in Kuala Lumpur," he said.

Abdul Halim said this in a press conference after handing over duties to Ranjit at the Royal Artillery Sixth Regiment field at Lok Kawi, Tuesday.

Abdul Halim also inspected the guard of honour.

First Division Infantry Commander, Major-General Datuk Ahmad Zaki Mokhtar, witnessed the handing over of duties at the event.

Abdul Halim said he served as Commander for one year and seven months after he was posted here on Dec 18, 2010.

He said the brigade under him had contributed to the development of Sabah and the nation, generally, through the National Blue Ocean Strategy (NBOS) like rendering assistance to build 30 homes to needy people in Sabah last year and getting involved in 15 projects of supplying water.

"I will never forget a particular sweet memory where the Fifth Infantry Brigade and I scaled Mount Kinabalu together with government agencies to set a record in the 'Malaysia Book of Records' early in the Ramadan month last year.

"We successfully hoisted the biggest logo of 1Malaysia at the highest mountain in Southeast Asia during the Fly the Jalur Gemilang campaign in conjunction with the National Day last year," he said.

Earlier in his speech, Abdul Halim called on the army here not to be complacent with the current security levels in Sabah.

He said they must always be prepared for any possibilities in the interest and safety of the nation.

Abdul Halim thanked the Head of State, State Government, public and private sectors, enforcement authorities including the navy and the people of Sabah for giving their support and cooperation during his tenure here.
