Kota Kinabalu: Assistant Finance Minister Datuk Donald Peter Mojuntin has also called for an end to the politicising of Sabah's independence."I feel there is no need for the issue of Sabah's Independence Day to be further politicised.

"Sabah also celebrates its Independence Day on the same day (Aug 31), which only differs by a few years, so let us not be too overly influenced by statements which only hurt the feelings of Sabahans and also fellow Malaysians in Sarawak and Semenanjung," he said.

Mojuntin said he felt it was better to get this issue out of the way and for Sabahans to celebrate Independence Day nationally with the rest of the country.

"There is no argument on the issue. History is straight forward, so there is no longer any need to dwell further on this issue," he said.

He said this at the Giatmara Sabah Zone 4 Graduation ceremony for 300 students enrolled in various skill courses from Giatmara Sabah centres in Kota Kinabalu, Penampang, Tuaran, Sepanggar, Gaya and Putatan at Tang Dynasty Hotel, Wednesday.

He said the efforts of Giatmara which is a Mara agency under the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development were in line with those of the Barisan Nasional Government under the leadership of the Prime Minister to ensure the welfare of the people through various programmes.

"We need to recognise the efforts of the State and Federal governments to organise these community assistance programmes.

"For example, Giatmara in Zone 4 has completed the maintenance of PPRT homes in their individual areas. I was made to understand as many as 70 homes in each area are almost completed as a whole with the budget from the ministry.

"In addition, I was made to understand that Giatmara has also provided various skill courses such as fashion and dressmaking, automotive technology, electrical wiring, interior design and computer systems technology which will surely increase the capability and knowledge of their participants," he said.

Mojuntin later presented the students with their graduation scrolls.

Also present at the event was Giatmara Sabah General Manager Mohd Fazal Baniamin.
