Ewon explains lower perk for Sabah JKKKs

Kota Kinabalu: The monthly allowance for Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) chairmen in Sabah is lower than in the peninsula because of differences in terms of the number of people holding the posts.JKKK chairmen and headmen posts are held by the same person in the peninsula, while in Sabah the posts are held by two different people.

Explaining this, Rural Infrastructure Development Minister Datuk Ewon Ebin said the JKKK chairmen in the peninsula received an increment in the monthly allowance in 2006 and in 2011.

Therefore, he said, a proposal to streamline the monthly allowance for JKKK chairmen in Sabah with those in the peninsula will not arise because allowances have been increased for both posts.

"Beginning January last year, the monthly allowance for JKKK chairmen is RM400 whereby the Federal Government pays RM200 and remaining RM200 is paid with State funds at a cost of RM6.85 million a year," he said.

Ewon was replying to Kunak Assemblyman Datuk Nilwan Kabang on the monthly allowance of JKKK chairmen in Sabah that is lower than in the peninsula, during question time at the State Legislative Assembly, here, Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Community Development and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Azizah Mohd Dun said government aid will not merely focus on the elderly because there are families that are eligible and in need of assistance.

She was replying to Kuala Penyu Assemblyman John Teo Mau Sing on any proposal to give the senior citizen aid to elderly couples who are over 60.

Azizah reminded that the Government aid is only temporary relief for the recipients as the number of applicants for the aid is increasing every day and the approval is given based on availability of funds.

Minister in the Chief Minister's Department Datuk Nasir Tun Sakaran said there are nine Qariah Imam responsible to lead prayers in mosques and that nine Rawatib Imam to assist the Qariah Imam have been appointed in Sukau.

Nasir was replying to Sukau Assemblyman Datuk Saddi Abdul Rahman during question time on the number of Qariah and Rawatib Imams in the constituency and measures to address the shortage of the Imams in Sukau.

So far, Nasir said there are altogether 1,940 Imams of all categories for the State mosque, divisions and districts in Sabah.

On another issue, he said a total of 27 graduates from the Al-Azhar University have been appointed to teach in Islamic Secondary Religious Schools under the Sabah Islamic Affairs Department (Jheains) in the State.

Nasir said the graduates and those from other universities are also given employment opportunities to hold the posts of Islamic affairs officers, administration and management officers and as counselling officers in the department and its agencies.
