SDTA President Taren Sunil Manoharan summed up their many successful activities at a function held at their clubhouse on Dec 29.
"We have successfully organised the tournaments and development programmes in our 2012 tennis calendar. In fact in addition to the regular events, we have even organised a few additional activities and upgraded others such as the TYT Cup," said Taren Sunil.
"To encourage tennis at the junior level, we have also upgraded the Zinten Cup Junior Invitational Tournament to an 'open' event which resulted in very encouraging response and participation by players from outside Sandakan. Meanwhile we have retained the tried and tested format for the Manoharan Cup. Not surprisingly, it remains as popular as ever for juniors who have just picked up the game," he added.
He pointed out that several of our juniors also performed well in outstation tournaments.
SDTA has engaged two professional coaches in 2012 to teach juniors as well as adults who want to improve their skills at the game to generate interest and bring up the level of the game.
Another important highlight was the resurfacing of their tennis courts and he thanked to the Minister of Youth & Sports, Datuk Peter Pang En Yin for paying his personal attention to ensure the completion of the project.
2012 also saw SDTA celebrate their 25th anniversary culminating with a fund-raising dinner that managed to raise a substantial amount to finance their various development programmes and projects.
He thanked the Youth and Sports Ministry as well as all the sponsors for their financial supports and urged them to continue their support and he also sought the co-operation and assistance of all members to make the coming year another fruitful one for SDTA.
He also expressed his appreciation to Sabah Tennis Association President Johnson Koh Yong Siang for his dedication towards improving tennis in Sabah which has also greatly benefited all STA Affiliates including SDTA.
