Clement Maxime Benjamin Barre was found by a staff at about 7.30pm after the staff had gone to check on him when he did not come out nearly two hours after he went into the common toilet.
He was found with cuts on the arms and the neck.
Police found a paper knife at the scene and also recovered a note written in French and cash on the bed of his hotel room. The body has been sent to the Duchess of Kent Hospital.
The man and his girlfriend had checked into the hotel on Jan. 4 where they stayed for two nights and on Jan. 6 they went to Sukau and returned to the hotel after the trip at 2pm on Jan 7.
The girlfriend reportedly flew to Kota Kinabalu thereafter.
Deputy district police chief Supt Fadzil Mohd Ali said police have classified the case as sudden death.
