Kota Kinabalu: Three men were hurt when the lorry they were travelling in slammed into a tree before landing on its side after trying to avoid hitting a Perodua Kancil along Jalan Tuaran Lama, Menggatal, Friday.

It was learnt that the lorry was heading towards Kampung Tobobon from the city when the Kancil overtook them at 4pm.

"The Kancil was on the left lane in front of us and I tried to overtake by going to the right lane," said the lorry driver known only as Dila, in his 40s.

"I lost control of the lorry after trying to avoid crashing into the Kancil which suddenly moved to the right lane before moving back to the left lane again when I was about to overtake it," he said.

The impact caused the lorry to swerve before slamming into a tree and landed on its side at the opposite road, resulting in two of his passengers sustaining serious injuries while he only sustained minor injuries.

"I'm grateful for the help from a passerby who rushed us to the hospital in a van," he said, adding that the Kancil sped off without stopping.

City Traffic and Public Order Chief DSP Peter Umbuas urged eyewitnesses to come forward to assist police in its investigations.
