Man who attempts to steal from ATM held

Published on: Friday, January 25, 2013

Papar: A striking white shirt was a dead giveaway for a local man who attempted to steal from an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) in the Papar Township, here, early Thursday.

District Police Chief DSP George Abdul Rakman said the 36-year-old unemployed was nabbed at 12pm in Kimanis the same day upon receiving a tip-off based on a closed circuit television camera installed in the bank premises.

He said preliminary investigations showed the man entering the premises at 4am before attempting to pry open one of the ATMs but failed.

It was learnt that an off-duty policeman who had wanted to withdraw cash discovered the damaged ATM at about 6.30am.

"His attempts were recorded on the closed circuit television and police were able to nab him based on his physical appearance and clothes worn by the man during the act," he said.

The man, he said, had confessed to committing the crime, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 380/511 of the Panel Code for theft in premises and attempts to commit offences.
