Two swim to safety after vehicle swept away by water currents

Kota Kinabalu: Two men managed to swim to safety after their vehicle was swept away by strong currents on Friday.The driver, a 32-year-old teacher from Sarawak and his passenger, aged 28, were believed to be heading towards Kota Kinabalu from Tamparuli town when the incident happened at 11pm.It was learnt the duo who were unfamiliar with the district had decided to take the only route they knew to the city centre which was to cross a bridge even though it was submerged in water. Their decision, however, proved to be wrong when strong water currents swept their Toyota Rav 4 off the bridge and into the river with both men inside. They, however, managed to save themselves by swimming onto the riverbank before police and a team from the Fire and Rescue Department came to their aid.
