He said early investigations showed that one of the opponent supporters had asked a question to the candidate, causing the candidate's supporters to hit the victim on his ribs.

"This prompted the victim to lodge a report the same day and police are waiting for instructions from the deputy public prosecutor to proceed with the investigation," he said, adding that the case would be investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code.

He said police detained a 22-year-old man for carrying an 11-inch long knife in the second incident in Ranau at about 4pm on Wednesday.

The man, he said, was found to be in possession of the knife while attending a political talk held at the Ranau Community Hall.

He said both cases would be investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting and Section 6(1) of the Corrosive, Explosive and Dangerous Weapons Act 1958 (Revised 1998).

On another development, he said, as of Wednesday, a total of 714 campaigns were held Statewide including 389 talks, 175 political ceremonies and 59 political assemblies.
