Penampang: Road users can expect an improved Competent Driving Licence issued by the Road Transport Department beginning August. Its Director-General Datuk Ismail Ahmad said its design is similar to the MyKad, which is part of its continuous transformation initiative in improving the quality and durability of the driving licence itself.

He said the introduction of the new design would see high security features with high quality and durability, adding that the move was aimed at addressing issues often raised relating to counterfeiting, durability and quality.

He said this during a meet-and-greet session held at the State Road Transport Department, here, Monday.

"Those who will renew their licence this August will be the first to have the licence," he said, adding that existing licence holders are not required to convert to the new design but may do so based on their security.

On another development, he said the Road Transport Department has launched the Malaysian Vocational Licence which combines three types of licence into one, namely Public Service Vehicles (PSV), Goods Driving Licence (GDL) and Conductor Licence.

He said licence holders only need to pay RM20 for the licence, which combines all three compared to previously where RM20 is charged for each licence valid for a period of one year.

This, he said, would benefit more than 149,909 vocational licence holders who also hold both PVS and GDL licences.

Towards this end, he said the Road Transport Department would be having a meet-and-greet session with the people from 2pm to 5pm every Thursday Statewide where the Director and branch directors would be there to meet the people themselves.
