Kota Kinabalu: DAP's Luyang Assemblyman, Hiew King Cheu, suggested that the Land and Survey Department be revamped to improve its efficiency and effectiveness. He claimed that the department was well known for its "feet dragging" although it should have trained, experienced and qualified staff handling its core services at present, utilising its computerised system.
"The Survey Department is well known for its slackness and is unable to deliver work in a given time.
"All this is due to the management of the department.
This can be explained with why does a simple task of transferring land ownership can take up to years," he said in a statement, Sunday.
Hiew said the department's title survey plans, for example the conversion of the imperial set to metric set, can also cause confusion and dispute.
Furthermore, he pointed out the information on the department's data is 20 years old.
He cited the title survey plan and road mapping of the Foh Sang shops which does not have updated details, as the drawing in use is already 20 years old.
"There is no amendment, updating and even the lands which had been officially acquired were not shown in the drawing.
The existing road systems and reserves are no way near to what is shown on the Land and Survey title survey plan," he said.
He said there should not be a problem for the department to update its data as it is using an advanced and accurate technology such as the Global Positioning System (GPS).
"It is time that the Sabah State Government do something immediately and positively to revamp the Land and Survey Department so as to give the people some benefits and convenience in their work and wellbeing," he said.
