Lahad Datu Sports complex likely ready next October

Kota Kinabalu: The Lahad Datu Sports Complex is now 22.85 per cent complete and is expected to meet its target completion date in mid-October 2014."As of June 8, earthwork and piling work have been fully completed.

Concrete work for the grandstand has just started," said Youth and Sports Assistant Minister Masiung Banah.

Banah was replying to Lahad Datu Assemblyman Datuk Mohammad Yusof Apdal on the progress of construction works on Lahad Datu Sports Complex during question time at the State Legislative Assembly, Tuesday.

"Physical works have reached 22.85 per cent compared to its target of 20.74 per cent, which is 2.11 per cent ahead of schedule," he said.

"At first, the works were scheduled to be completed in January 2013.

However, it has to be re-scheduled to August 2013 because of additional works involving flood control," he said.

This means, he said, that the main component of the project which is the construction of Tawau dam will not only function as water reservoir but also as flood control mechanism for Tawau area.

Pairin said this in response to Sri Tanjong Assemblyman Chan Foong Hin about the status of the scheme and the construction of the Tawau dam.

"The cost for the construction of this dam is estimated at RM271 million and physical works will be started once the allocation money is received," he said.
