Pedestrian killed in hit-and-run accident

Kota Kinabalu: A pedestrian was killed while a motorcyclist and the pillion rider suffered serious injuries in a hit-and-run along Kota Kinabalu-Papar road, near Kampung Dumpil, Putatan, here, Monday.The pedestrian, identified as Osman Jailani, 82, from Kampung Dumpil, succumbed to his injuries at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital about four hours after a four-wheel-drive vehicle knocked him while he was crossing the road at about 6pm.

Sources said the four-wheel-drive vehicle, believed heading towards Kinarut from the city centre, fled the scene after hitting Osman.

It was also said that a motorcycle behind the vehicle skidded off the road as the rider tried to avoid hitting the victim who was lying in the middle of the road.

Both the rider and pillion rider were thrown a couple of metres away from the scene.

All three victims were immediately rushed to the hospital.

Osman, who suffered a broken leg and head injuries, however died at the hospital around 10pm.

Both the motorcyclist and pillion rider sustained face and body injuries and are reported to be in stable condition.

Penampang Police Chief DSP Ratan Kumar Singh said police are still carrying out investigation.

He urged anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward to assist police in the investigation.
