City Deputy Police Chief Supt M Chandra said the man and his pillion, both 20, was heading towards 1Borneo Hypermall from Tebobon when the 3.15pm accident happened.
"It was learnt that the rider lost control of his EX5 motorcycle which skidded and knocked into a lamppost on the road divider, causing him to sustain severe head injuries, killing him instantly.
"His pillion is unconscious, believed to be due to internal head injuries, and is currently warded at the Likas Hospital," he said.
In another accident, a motorcyclist in his 20s sustained injuries when he ran into a van along Jalan Tuaran as he was heading towards the traffic lights near the Mile 5 Chinese cemetery here at about 11am the same day.
Chandra said preliminary investigations showed the van driver who came from the Inanam direction was heading towards the traffic lights, which had turned red when the motorcycle rear-ended his van.
"According to the van driver, the motorcyclist was rushed to the hospital by the van owner where he is reported to be in stable condition with no serious injuries," he said.
