Over the years, there had been talk that despite the significance of holding the celebrations at the Padang Merdeka, it was too small to accommodate many of the participants, let alone spectators.
Whether Prince Philip Park would become the future venue for such unity gatherings remains to be seen. The park is equally historic as it was where many colonial-era events were held in addition to the fact that the British Royal couple also visited it around the time of independence.
A Daily Express reader Mohd Salim said unlike town padangs in other State Capitals, the one in KK is too small for events and should just be maintained for historic reasons and major events held elsewhere like in Tg Aru which also has coastal advantage.
A member of the public regretted the uncompleted construction work going on at the Padang Merdeka, noting that not too long ago there was also an uproar over the cutting of several valuable raintrees there.
Prior to the recent General Election, there was also a controversy when opposition Bersih 4.0 rally supporters and marchers occupied the site.
"There is actually no urgent need to do grandstand renovation and the padang should be left as it is.
Improvements only add more stones and concrete on the padang which should remain a padang with green grass and good drainage," sighed Desmond Wong, a senior citizen.
