The deceased have been identified as 56-year-old Amran Juma who was the driver and his passengers Zuhan Amil, 26, and Ajun Ibrahim, 35.
It was believed that the trio were heading towards Semporna from Kunak.
When they arrived at the scene, its driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to skid into the other lane before crashing into the lorry which was carrying palm oil.
The impact caused the driver and Zuhan who was sitting in front to get trapped in the damaged vehicle, while Ajun who was sitting behind was thrown five metres away.
District Fire and Rescue Department Chief, Jaafar Salleh, said they received a distress call at about 5.09pm.
He said a fire engine manned by five personnel arrived at the scene some 29 minutes later.
"When the rescue team arrived at the scene, the driver and the front passenger were trapped while the third passenger was lying on the road," he said. He said rescue team had to use a hydraulic cutter to extricate those trapped in the vehicle, which took about 15 minutes.
Meanwhile, in KOTA KINABALU, five men escaped uninjured when the Perodua Rusa vehicle they were on landed on its side, Monday.
It was learnt that the 24-year-old driver had lost control of the vehicle which skidded before crashing on the road and landing on its side in the 4.20pm accident.
The men, all of whom worked as wiremen in the same company, were said to be heading towards Inanam from the Sadong area when the accident happened.
