Mayor Datuk Abidin Madingkir said on Thursday, the three programmes - 4km Patriotic Run, Healthy and Fit, Anti-litterbug Patriot and the Independence Jalur Gemilang Convoy - is a collaborative effort by the Youth and Sports Ministry, City Hall and the Department of Youth and Sports.
"For the first time the programme is being held and is an extension of the programme under the Youth and Sports Ministry, which was first held on July 6 in Sandakan, subsequently in Tawau, Kudat and Keningau on Sept 7, simultaneously," he said.
Madingkir said the sports programme will be an annual affair for the Youth and Sports Ministry.
He anticipates some 3,000 participants for the free-to-participate 4km Patriotic Run, which will begin at 6.30am from the Merdeka field to Bukit Nenas and back, through the KK by-pass and Jalan Istana roads.
"A total of 3,000 free T-Shirts will be given to early birds.
An additional 50 prizes are also available to lucky draw winners with prizes ranging from tablet PCs, cameras, bicycles, electrical goods, sports equipment and others," said Madingkir, adding that the flag-off will be done by the Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister's Department, Datuk Edward Yong.
Madingkir added the Anti-Litterbug Patriot campaign will be held with nearby local authorities like Penampang, Papar, Putatan, Ranau, Kota Belud and Tuaran, to ensure a significant impact will be made on the day.
Under the anti-litterbug programme some 200 people in 50 vehicles will go on a convoy from the Merdeka field to Penampang, Papar, Putatan and from the Sabah Tea ground to Ranau, Kota Belud, Tuaran and back to the city on Sept 16.
Participants of the same programme will also visit shops, stalls and offices to instill awareness and reminders on cleanliness, while distributing pamphlets on independence and education, under an Awareness Walk.
"At the same time all district officers including myself, the City Mayor, will also sign a memorandum on the execution of the Anti-litterbug campaign. The event will be witnessed by the people's representatives and local community leaders," he said.
He added the memorandum will then be handed over to the State Secretary, Tan Sri Sukarti Wakiman.
Finally, the Jalur Gemilang Convoy will use 10 Information Department vehicles, and scout through the city to ignite the spirit of Sabahans to love the country's peace, unity and urge that the Jalur Gemilang flags be raised in houses, offices, premises, businesses and vehicles.
Madingkir also said the convoy will also promote the Malaysia Day celebration, and thereafter the Information Department will also hold an entertainment performances at a place called "Pentarama".
