Tawau: Two ice factories were told to shut down their operations for 14 days for suspected ice contamination during an operation conducted by the Health Department here, Tuesday. Environmental Health Officer, Rahman Sampe said the closure of both factories was done due to the possibilities of contamination from outside the factories and workers who do not practice hygiene and do not own any health and food management certificates.

Rahman headed the operation, which involved 16 health inspectors.

Earlier, he said there were three ice factories, which were inspected based on the risk-based inspection and the Food Hygiene Rules 2009.

Rahman also said that the lorries that carry ice were also inspected during the operation to ensure there is no contamination.

He said that ice had a higher risk of causing illnesses as it is easily contaminated.
