Kota Kinabalu: Despite all the warnings, public awareness and education programmes, people still get behind the wheel of their vehicles while intoxicated.

City Deputy Police Chief Supt M. Chandra said seven out of eight drivers who took a breathalyser test using the Evidential Breath Analyser Equipment (EBA-II) during a roadblock along Jalan Kolam early Saturday had exceeded the allowed alcohol limit.

He said they could be charged under Section 45A of the Road Transportation Act 1987.

This carries a fine of between RM1,000 and RM6,000 or a jail term of up to 12 months.

The roadblock was part of the Ops Cantas Khas (Traffic), code-named Ops Mabuk, mounted by the Kota Kinabalu Police Department's Traffic Division, involving two officers and 15 personnel.

A total of 11 summonses were also issued to drivers for various traffic offences.
