Published on: Thursday, January 16, 2014

Tawau: A restaurant owner saw red when the 20 bags of fragrant rice he ordered two weeks ago turned out to be crushed rice.

Anuar @ Nur Ibrahim who owns Restoran Sri Pantai said he had been buying the same rice brand since 2011 but it was the first time that he had encountered such problem.

According to him, he had reported the matter to the Rice and Padi Monitoring unit in the Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister, which had also taken a sample of the rice for further action.

Anuar said that even though the distributor of the rice had already replaced the rice with a higher quality rice that cost RM48 per bag compared to the one that he purchased earlier (RM37 per bag) he would like further explanation.

A spokesperson for the distributor confirmed receiving the complaint from Anuar but stated that the company only packed and distributed the product here.

The spokesperson said the fragrant rice was sent from Kota Kinabalu and described the confusion as "not an issue."

The Ministry had also confirmed receiving the report and that further investigation was being done on the sample taken.

However, the officer concerned declined to comment further since the case was still under investigation.
