A rescue team from the Sembulan Fire and Rescue Department took about 30 minutes to extricate the body of Saharuddin Samsuddin, from Kg Likas, while the 30-year-old Land Cruiser driver who sustained injuries was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Two by paramedics who arrived moments later.
It was believed that the Land Cruiser was heading towards Putatan from the city centre when the 3.05am tragedy happened. The impact caused his vehicle to swerve before keeling on its side not far from the taxi.
Elsewhere, one man sustained minor injuries while two escaped unscathed in three separate accidents here on Friday and Saturday.
In the first incident, a woman in her 20s, crashed her Toyota into a traffic light after she lost control of her vehicle at about 3.30am, Saturday.
It was learnt she was heading towards Lintas from the Penampang direction when the incident happened.
The impact caused the traffic light to tilt on its side, however, the woman escaped unharmed.
In the second incident, a 22-year-old man crashed his vehicle into a lamppost at Sembulan as he headed towards Golden Hill from Sinsuran at about 1.50am.
The impact caused the lamppost to fall, bringing with it several electricity cables. However, there was no blackout.
The man walked away uninjured, but his vehicle was completely damaged in the front.
In another incident, a 40-year-old man from Brunei fainted after he drove his Isuzu Trooper straight into a drain near the Hill Top area at about 9.50pm on Friday. The man sustained minor injuries was assisted by passersby who arrived moments later.
