District Police Chief DSP Ratan Kumar Singh said two policemen together with two Civil Defence Department personnel patrolling the area decided to inspect the suspicious looking three-tonne lorry about 5am.
The driver in his 30s, who was asked to pull over at the side of the road, tried to bribe his way out when the team discovered some 5,000 litres of diesel worth about RM10,000 in the lorry.
It was learnt that the lorry was heading towards Penampang from the Papar direction when the team chanced upon him.
Ratan said the case involved subsidised diesel, adding that they would hand over the case to the Ministry of Domestic, Trade, Consumerism and Cooperatives Sabah Office for further action.
