Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah President Cup squad finally found their winning ways with a convincing 4-0 win over Pahang Sports School (SSMP) at the Bandar Penawar Stadium on Monday.

The team who found goals hard to come by and only managed to draw in their past five matches came good despite illness affecting most of the players before the match.

The opening goal was scored by Azli Saidi in the 20th minute followed by Rusmanizam Roseland nine minutes later. The team extended their lead to three goals with a penalty, which was converted by Azizan Nordin deep into injury time in the first half. Defender Rusmanizam who was converted to the striker role since the previous match got his second of the match with a free kick 30 meters from the goal.

Coach Burhan Ajui was overjoyed with the long awaited victory and paid credit to his players.

"Credit must be given to the players as they followed what was asked of them and it was a well deserved victory."

"The positive thing is that we are starting to get goals and with Rusmanizam in hot streaks, we will continue to deploy him as the main striker from his normal centre back position."

He said it was not easy to play against the SSMP team as they are a well disciplined side and superbly fit.

"They have been together for a long time and technically they are very good and full of energy."

"We played a very tactical game and tried to put pressure on them and it worked as they failed to find their rhythm with our aggressive play and we controlled the game from the start."

With the win, Sabah finished the first round match with 11 points from two wins, five draws and three defeats.

They will open their second round match with the same team here at the Likas Stadium on Thursday (March 13) at 4.15pm.
