RM104,500 worth of fags seized from parked lorry

Kota Kinabalu: A total of 47,500 packets of contraband cigarettes worth RM104,500 were seized by the Customs Department on Tuesday.

State Customs Department Director Datuk Dr Janathan Kandok said an enforcement team, led by Senior Officer Ajamaain Kenit, conducted an inspection on a 1.5-tonne Isuzu lorry which was left parked along Jalan Nosoob-Kobusak in Penampang.

He said this led to the discovery of various brands of cigarettes, namely 5,000 packets of Era Menthol, a total of 27,500 packets of Era Premium and 15,000 packets of Era Black, adding that no arrest was made.

Janathan said this during a media conference held at Wisma Kastam, here, Thursday.

Also present was his Deputy Director (Enforcement and Compliance) Hamzah Sundang.

"We will not compromise on any individuals found involved in smuggling activities, and those caught in possession, smuggling, distributing and selling contraband items will be charged under Section 135(d) of the Customs Act," he said.

The Act carries a sentence of not less than 10 times the amount of customs duty or not more than 20 times the customs duty or a period of up to three years' jail.
