Kota Kinabalu: Three goals from three set pieces saw Sabah slumping to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Penang in their Premier League clash at the Likas Stadium on Monday. The home team with newly signed Jerome Doe started brightly as they dominated the game and the visitors were forced to defend deep.

Jerome had a chance to put Sabah ahead in the sixth minute when a shot by Maxsius Musa from outside the box was too powerful for the Penang keeper to hold and the ball fell into the path of Jerome but the Liberian was unable to control the ball and shot wide instead.

Barely a minute later, Jerome managed to escape his marker and unleashed a shot that just missed the crossbar.

The continuous pressure finally paid off in the 37th minute when Jerome was fouled outside the box and Brazilian import Andrea Esposito on his second stint with the Sabah team curled a beauty round the defensive wall and into the top left corner to the delight of the home fans.

The restart again saw Sabah starting in great style and Pocuca Petrag saw his header bounce off the crossbar and Andre also missed a good chance to put Sabah two goals up a minute later after good work by Maxsius.

The two misses proved costly as Penang found the equaliser immediately after that from a header by Mohad Zamri Chin in the 51st minute through a corner.

The goal lifted the Penang players and 14 minutes later, their import Buengo Andre Titi flicked in a header from a free kick to put them ahead.

The islanders stunned the home fans to further increase their lead with another carbon copy goal this time scored by Korean import Lee Gil Hoon's head in the 70th minute.

Despite the introduction of Rozaimi Abd Rahman with less than 20 minutes to go Sabah failed to find the target.

The defeat was Sabah's fifth this season and they will next meet Felda United on Friday (April 18).
