Sabah's latest budding talent

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah's Charlayne Chong is the latest golf talent produced by the State recognised by the Malaysia Golf Association (MGA).The SK St Francis student who will only turn 12 in August this year recently caught the eyes of MGA with her consistency and performance during the just concluded National MSSM Golf Championship which was held in Johor.The national body's Junior Development Committee subsequently offered her a place in the national junior squad.

She is now following her brother, Albright Chong's footsteps, who is one of the top juniors in the country and a double Sukma 2012 gold medallist in Pahang. Charlayne, who is the youngest of the Chong siblings is a member of Sabah State back-up squad under the local Sukma and State coach, Ronnie Pancratius, who initiated the State MSN Junior Development Programme.She was placed in top seventh placings in the Under-12 category for the past two years in the National Schools Council (MSSM) Championship.She is also the current State MSSS U12 Champion and had retained her title for the past three years in a row.

At the MSSM meet this year, she and fellow teammates Valerie V.Langkab and Norsyazwanatasa Shalhan emerges as runners-up in the team event.Charlayne who practises and trains regularly with her two brothers, Albright and Eldrick, another up and coming golfer at the Sutera Golf and Country Club was happy with the recognition by MGA, and hopes to join the National Elite team in few years time but in the meantime she said she will focus in her UPSR exam this year.
