He was reportedly assaulted as he was about to close shop for the day, near the KDCA building, here, resulting in him sustaining fractures to his skull.
The 56-year-old Sarawakian, identified by family members as Hei Kok Meng, was said to have died at about 11.45pm.
His body has been sent for post mortem.
He leaves behind a wife, a Form Four daughter and a son who is currently studying in Kuala Lumpur.
The victim's Managing Director, identified only as Ong, recalled receiving a call from his former employee, known only as Mary, alerting him of the incident.
"She told me that 'Ah Meng' had been beaten and was lying unconscious in the office premises," he said, adding that the victim would always stay back to manage the accounts after they close shop at 5pm.
"By the time I arrived at the scene, the place was already surrounded by policemen searching the area for clues," he claimed.
It was learnt that Mary had resigned from the company last month and she received a call from someone working at the ice cube processing located next door.
Ong said that the security guard who clocked in for work at about 7pm found the unconscious man in a pool of blood inside the premises with the shop's door ajar.
District Police Chief DSP Ratan Kumar Singh said two local men have been brought in to facilitate investigations.
