Kota Kinabalu: Some 76 paddy planters lost their source of income when more 100 acres of their paddy fields this year, were destroyed when ploughing and harvesting problems were not resolved.Bongawan assemblyman Mohamad Alamin, who disclosed this, said the State Government should take immediate measures to look into the plight of these planters and fully address the concerned problems.

"The affected paddy farmers came to see me and they cried when relating about losing their crops because there were no machines when it was time for the paddy to be harvested including to plough the fields.

"My heart really goes out to them as many of them are relying on the crop as their source of income.

"In this matter, I blame Pertubuhan Peladang for failing to tackle the problems which has caused loss of income to the planters and an immediate mechanism needs to be created in resolving the issue," he said.

Mohamad said this when debating the motion of thanks on the Head of State Tun Juhar Mahiruddin's policy speech at the State Legislative Assembly here on Monday.

He said he fears that the affected paddy fields would become idle and the farmers demoralised if the problems persist.

On rampant fish bombing in Kimanis-Bongawan waters, Mohamad said security posts under the Fisheries Department need to be set up in those areas to discourage fish bombers.

"The traditional fishermen in my constituency are worrying that they will be losing their source of income to active fish bombing activities that are committed by outsiders.

"Enforcement officers at the posts can take action against the culprits and this will eventually reduce the illegal way of catching fish," he said.

At the same time, he said such move could also protect the environment and marine animals.

Mohamad also called on the Public Works Department to expedite upgrading and sealing works on about 20km of gravel roads in several villages in Bongawan that are regularly used by the residents to go to town.

Among those stretches, he said are from Kg.Lingan Lama to Kg.Lingan Baru, and from Kg. Kuala Lumagar to Ulu Kimanis that need to be sealed.

Mohamad said it is timely to establish a cultural centre in his constituency due to rich cultural heritage that should be appreciated and preserved for the young generations.

For example, he said, the making of a traditional instrument known as Gambus is very popular in Bongawan and several residents are continuing the tradition of producing Gambus.
