Kota Kinabalu: The Private Member's Bill that PAS is seeking to table in the Parliament to pave the way for the implementation of Hudud law in Kelantan, if allowed to proceed, may tear apart the very fabric that forms the foundation laid by the forefathers of the nation.Stating this Friday, Liberal Democratic Party President Datuk Teo Chee Kang (pic) said while LDP respects Islam as the official religion of the Federation, as provided for under Article 3 of the Federal Constitution, the fact remains that the Constitution is secularistic as opposed to theocratic.

"Any attempt to turn Malaysia into a theocratic state defies the fundamental that Malaysia is a built on a wide diversity of ethnicity, cultures and religions. LDP vehemently opposes the tabling of the said Bill in Parliament," he said.

He said it is interesting to note that apart from issuing statements stating its objections, the DAP seems powerless to do anything despite the fact that it has the most number of Parliament seats compared with PKR and PAS in Pakatan Rakyat.

Before the 13th General Election, Teo said, DAP leaders gave strong assurances that they will not allow PAS to proceed even an inch with their Hudud law agenda and the voters placed reliance on such assurances.

So, he said, it is now incumbent upon the DAP to take responsibility to stop it. "Otherwise, it is only honourable for them to disassociate themselves from PAS by leaving Pakatan Rakyat".

On this issue, Teo said the de facto leader of PKR, Anwar Ibrahim, said PAS has every democratic right to pursue its goals.

"Is he going to also say that 'DAP has every democratic right to oppose?

What is PKR's stand on this issue? What is the stand taken by the DAP and PKR leaders in Sabah?" he asked.
