PETALING JAYA: Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has withdrawn from the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) presidential race, leaving its incumbent and his wife Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail to retain the post uncontested. Wan Azizah has been PKR President since the party was established in 1999.

PKR election director Datuk Johari Abdul said Anwar had informed the central election committee of his decision in a letter dated April 19, last week.

"He did not state the reason for doing so. It's sufficient that he did.

"But I understand that he has decided on the advice of his legal team to concentrate on his case," said Johari at a press conference on the PKR election, here, Tuesday.

Anwar and Azizah's candidacy were announced during nomination day on March 29, for the party's election, which is from April 25 to May 11.

Meanwhile, Johari said the PKR Complaints Committee will scrutinise all complaints regarding the eligibility of candidates it has received.

The election will be held in stages starting with Lawas in Sarawak this Friday, followed by Sarawak, Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang the day after.

The other areas are Johor and Melaka on April 27; Kedah, Perlis and Sabah (May 3); Penang, Perak and Sabah (May 4); Negeri Sembilan and Federal Territory (May 10) and Selangor on May 11.

About 10,000 candidates are contesting at branch and central levels with 496,923 eligible voters. - Bernama
