Kota Kinabalu: Some 50 international athletes have confirmed their entries for the International Masters Athletics Championship 2014, which will be held at the Likas Stadium on May 17-18.They will be among the about 250 veteran athletes who will be competing in the championship, which is now an annual event for the Sabah Masters Athletics Association (Samas).

According to Samas President, Aliudin Jumaat, the organisers are targeting a total of about 300 athletes to participate in this year's championship and currently, they already received registrations from five countries, including Hong Kong, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore and Brunei.

"We are still waiting for confirmation from India, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Japan as we have already sent invitations to them and we are expecting their reply soon.

"The organisers have also received registrations from Perak, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and a team from the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM)," said Aliudin, adding that the closing date for registrations will be on April 28.

According to Aliudin, the international athletes would definitely make the championship more interesting and would be a preparation stage for the Malaysian International Open Masters Athletics Championships on May 31-June 1.

"After the Malaysia Open, all attention will then go to the Asian Masters, which will be held in Japan on September 19-23," he said.

Sabah's veteran athletes will also be vying for the Sabah Overall Champion trophy, which was brought home by Tuaran in 2013.

Among the top favourites would be Juliana Gumpil, who bagged numerous medals in track events last year.

Other athletes who will be favourites include Tau Yu Eng (Asia Masters javelin champion), Noorailesyah Sadiman, Adenah Lojuhon and Linda Oh from Singapore.

The two-day championship will begin at 7am to 5pm and will see 32 events being contested - 16 events each for men and women categories with 11 age groups between 35 years to 85 years.
