PKR panel to assist SPM, STPM students

PETALING JAYA: PKR plans to establish a Higher Education Appeals Panel (PRPT) to assist lower-income students gain university admission and secure scholarships for high-achieving students who are overlooked after their SPM and STPM examinations, said Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin.The panel, made up of PKR Youth members and volunteers, seeks to review Malaysia's scholarship awarding system and higher education entrance requirements, said Sim at a press conference at the PKR headquarters on Wednesday.After examining the problems listed above, the panel plans to introduce reforms and raise alternative solutions to improve the execution of tertiary education entrances and scholarships.ADVERTISEMENT The panel will also conduct career training for school leavers and serve as an intermediary between families and appropriate parties for the cases it receives."The process to enter higher education institutions in Malaysia has never strayed far from controversy. Every year, the public hears of complaints and appeals from families and students who achieve good results but do not get the tertiary opportunities that they applied for," said Sim."Although many of the cases which garner public interest are those involving high-achieving students who are not awarded scholarships, there are still many more cases involving students from poor families who require assistance in gaining admittance into higher education institutions," he said, adding that the panel will pay close attention to cases involving lower income families.
