Kota Belud likely site for another army base

Kota Kinabalu: A military base may be set up in Kota Belud to house the recently created Task Force 450 which is currently co-located at the Lokawi Army Camp here with the Fifth Infantry Brigade.

Armed Forces Chief General Datuk Raja Mohamed Affandi Raja Mohamed Noor said:

"We would like the Fifth Infantry Brigade to remain in the Lokawi Army Base Camp because it has been there since the very beginning and has historical meaning for the armed forces."

"Thus, we might as well look at a new organisation being relocated to a different place," said Affandi, who is here on a work visit.

"I have been to Kota Belud 30 years ago and visiting the place is like going down memory lane for me," he said, adding he also monitored areas which needed repairs during his visit to the district.

Affandi was met by reporters after he visited Private Abdul Latif Md Yusuf who is being warded at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital II Intensive Care Unit here.

The 21-year-old soldier from Kedah sustained serious head injuries when he fell from a D-max vehicle as it negotiated a downhill corner near the Bekapit Post in Lahad Datu.

He was part of the team involved in the Jiwa Murni Programme when the incident occurred at about 5pm on Friday.

Also present were Army Field Commander Lt. General Datuk Zulkiple Kassim, Task Force 450 commander Major-General Datuk Ranjit Singh Ramday, Fifth Infantry commander Brigadier-General Jalaluddin Manan.
