17 Sandakan passengers hurt in separate crashes

Sandakan: Six passengers, including a minibus driver, sustained serious injuries and another eight passengers light injuries when the minibus they were travelling in collided with a car at a roundabout along Jalan Batu Sapi/Pasir Putih on Monday night.

It was learnt that the minibus was heading to Batu Sapi when it happened at 7.35pm, causing the minibus to overturn several times while the car skidded to the left side of the road. The 14 passengers and driver were rushed to hospital. The car driver escaped injuries.

In another mishap on Tuesday, three people, including two students, sustained injuries when a 26-seater bus they were traveling in collided with a lorry at a traffic light intersection in front of Tyng Garden, Mile 6,Jalan Utara here.

It was learnt that the bus, boarded by about 20 basketball players from a school was heading towards Mile 8 while the lorry was coming from Jalan Utara when the mishap occurred at about 9.45am.

The collision saw the bus going out of control before mowing down a traffic light post and ending up above a drain, several feet from the fencing of Wisma IJM.

Two of the students from the bus, a 71-year-old passenger and the 45-year-old bus driver sustained facial injuries and were rushed by an ambulance to the Duchess of Kent Hospital where they were reported to be in stable condition.

Another 19 passengers in the bus and a 28-year-old lorry driver were treated as outpatients at the hospital.

In another mishap involving three 4WD vehicles at Bandar Leetat here on Tuesday, Fire and Rescue personnel received a distress call and removed one of the victims trapped in one of the vehicles between 2.37pm and 3.10pm.

But two drivers escaped unhurt.

The victim who sustained injuries on his legs and back was rushed to the hospital.

Also at the scene were Civil Defence Department (JPAM) personnel and police.
