Kota Kinabalu: Express bus operators in Sabah have been reminded to give utmost priority to passenger safety and not only focus on garnering profits.

Sabah Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) Chairman Datuk Mohd Yusof Apdal said passenger safety is the main factor that will boost passenger confidence in continuing to choose using the transport service.

"The bus operators must pay more attention on safety of the passengers because providing for a safe journey would overcome other factors.

"No use having comfy seats, nice interior and pretty buses if the buses do not provide safe trips to the passengers," he said after receiving a courtesy call from Sabah Express Bus Drivers and Operators Association (Seboc) President, Datuk Donald Hanafi, at his office, Friday.

Yusof also slammed some operators who only focus on more profits until they are willing to lower the fares and compromise on the safety of the passengers.

"This selfish attitude would have a negative impact on the operation of the companies and other bus operators as they would also be affected and incur losses.

"Hence, I am calling on all the operators to comply with the rates of bus fares that have been fixed and they must emphasise on issue of safety," he said.

In the event, Donald said the concerned authority should listen to grouses and voices of the bus operators who have requested for Rest and Recreational (R&R) areas in Sabah.
