200 homeless in Semporna fire

Semporna: More than 200 squatter residents were made homeless when fire destroyed their homes in Kg Sejati 2, here, Friday night.

The area has about 58 houses and only 30 were saved from the fire.

District Fire and Rescue Department Chief, Mohd Razali Awang Ahmad, said two fire engines and 14 personnel led by Operations Chief Kadir Halalan went to the scene following a distress call at 7.15pm and were assisted by personnel from Kunak who arrived later.

He said the operation started once the rescue team arrived at 7.26pm by which time a huge number of houses had already caught fire, adding that they managed to bring the fire under control at 8.06pm.

"The operation ended at 10.06pm. Luckily, no casualties were reported in the incident. The cause of the fire and total loss are still being investigated," he said.
