Punched by teacher over Tudung
Published on: Thursday, July 03, 2014

Sandakan: A 14-year-old student claims she was punched on her head by a woman teacher for not wearing her "tudung" (headscarf) during school sports at the Sibuga Sports Complex on June 26.

The student only decided to lodge a report when the Principal failed to act on the incident. The student claimed the teacher had asked her why she had taken off her headscarf after she came out from the washroom at about noon.

She claimed to have been punched thrice on her head by the teacher, despite explaining that she had dropped her headscarf on the wet floor while she was in the washroom.

The student sought treatment at the Duchess of Kent Hospital, when she felt pain in her head after the alleged assault.

District Police Chief ACP Rowell Marong said the case is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt.

On another note, Rowell again reminded people not to easily believe a SMS text pertaining to the abduction of school children, believed to be the work of individuals out to intentionally create fear among the public.

Rowell said after he received a call related to the SMS on Wednesday, police had yet to receive any such report but would monitor the situation closely.
